What is Vetiver?
Also known as khus, vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is a type of perennial bunchgrass belonging to the family Poaceae. Though more closely related to sorghum, vetiver bears some resemblance to other fragrant grasses like citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus). The name vetiver comes from the Tamil word meaning “root that is dug up,” though the word khus, as it is commonly called in northern India, simply means “grass.”
Vetiver grows in wide clumps up to 5 feet tall with tall stems and long, thin, rigid leaves. While most grasses grow from mat-like root systems, vetiver’s roots grow downward – up to 13 feet deep. Though finely structured, the root system is very strong which makes it highly drought tolerant and valuable in preventing soil erosion. Commonly used to stabilize soil and protect crops from weeds and pests, the oil extracted from vetiver roots can be used in cosmetics, aromatherapy, and skincare.

Vetiver oil is distilled from the root of the plant and is valued in perfumery for its fixative properties. You can find vetiver oil in over 90% of western perfumes, though the fragrance is more heavily used in fragrance for men than women. It has a deep, woody, earthy odor that develops with aging. In addition to its use in perfumery, vetiver oil has been used in traditional medicine throughout Asia.
