Most people burn candles the way they burn everything else, whenever it is convenient and for however long feels right. A few minutes while getting dressed. A few hours while watching something at night. Then out whenever you remember to do it.
The problem is that candle wax has a memory. The length of each burn, especially early on, determines how the wax melts down over the entire life of the candle. Burn it too briefly and the wax learns a small pool. Keep doing that and you end up with a tunnel through the center, solid wax left along the sides, and a candle that burns itself out long before it should. Getting the timing right is not complicated, but it makes a real difference in how long your candle lasts and how consistently it performs.

The First Burn Is the Most Important
Every burn after the first one follows the pattern set by the first. Wax softens and melts outward from the flame, and it tends to follow the same path each time the candle is relit. If that first session does not melt the wax all the way to the edge of the vessel, every subsequent burn is likely to stop short of the edges too. That is how tunneling starts, and once it starts it becomes increasingly difficult to reverse.
On the first burn, let the candle stay lit until the entire top surface has melted into an even pool from edge to edge. For a 6.5-ounce Classic candle, that typically takes around two hours. It requires some patience on that first use, but this single step has more impact on the long-term performance of a candle than anything else you can do.
If you cannot commit to a full session on the first burn, it is better to wait entirely than to light it and blow it out early. Wax memory forms quickly and the first incomplete burn creates a reference point the candle will return to on every subsequent light.
How Long to Burn a Candle Each Session
After the first burn, the general rule is two to four hours per session. Less than two and the wax pool may not reach the edges, which gradually builds toward tunneling. More than four and the wick starts to overheat.
A wick that burns too long generates excess soot, can leave black marks along the inside of the glass, and burns itself down faster than intended, which reduces your total burn time across the life of the candle.
What to Do Before You Burn to Make Your Candle Last as Long as Possible
Taking a minute before you light a candle makes a real difference in how it performs. These are the things worth checking every time.
- Trim the wick to a quarter inch. Quality candles come pre-trimmed from the factory, so you can skip this on the very first burn. After that, trim before every light. An untrimmed wick burns hotter than the wax is designed to handle, which causes excess soot, leaves black residue on the inside of the glass, and can lead to a mushroom, a carbon buildup at the wick tip that makes the flame unstable and uneven.
- Check for debris in the wax. Trimmed wick pieces, dust, or anything else sitting in the wax pool can affect the burn. Remove anything floating in the wax before lighting.
- Choose a still spot away from drafts. An open window, a fan, or an air vent nearby causes the flame to flicker and lean, which melts one side of the candle faster than the other. Over several sessions, this creates an uneven surface that is hard to correct.
- Keep it away from direct sunlight. A candle sitting in direct sun can soften unevenly on one side even when it is not lit. A shaded spot on a shelf or table works better.
- Set it on a stable, heat-resistant surface. LAFCO vessels are solid glass with real weight, but a candle should still sit on something that will not be damaged by heat.

What Is Candle Tunneling and How Do You Avoid It
Tunneling is what happens when wax melts straight down through the center of a candle instead of across the full surface. You end up with a deep well of liquid wax around the wick while the outer ring of the candle remains solid. It is one of the most common candle problems and it is almost entirely caused by insufficient burn time, particularly in the first few uses.
Once a tunnel forms, it deepens with each subsequent burn because the walls of solid wax around it block heat from reaching the edges. The flame runs out of oxygen as the tunnel gets deeper, which means the candle burns less efficiently and the remaining wax around the sides is essentially wasted.
The fix is prevention. Give each burn enough time for the surface to fully liquefy, and keep the wick trimmed so the flame stays at the right size. When to Stop Burning a Candle for Good
Most candles are finished once there is about a quarter to half an inch of wax left at the bottom. At that point, there is no longer enough wax depth for the candle to burn the way it was designed to. The fragrance throw becomes weaker, the flame becomes less consistent, and the remaining heat sits closer to the base of the glass.
LAFCO candles are designed with a self-extinguishing wick, which means the candle will naturally stop burning before it reaches the very bottom of the vessel. So even if you still see wax left after the final burn, that does not mean the candle has more usable burn time left. It means the candle has reached the end of its safe, intended life.
That remaining wax also helps protect the vessel from excess heat. Instead of trying to relight the candle once the wick has stopped burning, let the wax cool completely, then clean out the vessel if you plan to repurpose it.
How Long LAFCO Candles Burn

These figures assume the candle is burned within the two to four hour window per session with the wick trimmed before each use. Consistently burning longer than four hours per session will reduce these numbers, as will skipping the wick trim.
Getting the Most from Every Candle
A candle that is cared for properly performs better than one that is not. The fragrance is more consistent from burn to burn, the glass stays clean, and the total hours you get out of it match what the candle was designed to deliver.
The rules are worth knowing once and then they become a habit. Give the first burn enough time to melt edge to edge. Trim the wick before every subsequent light. Keep sessions between two and four hours. Stay away from drafts. Stop at the quarter to half an inch mark. None of these take more than a few seconds to do, and the difference across the life of a candle is significant.
