Tell us about your store. What inspired you to create it?
I signed the lease on my 50th birthday, somewhat as a last resort. After spending eight years as a substitute teacher, I struggled to secure a full-time teaching position. My background, however, is steeped in the furniture industry—my family worked as wholesale furniture reps, and my sister and niece own a home furnishings store in California. Retail is in my blood, so I decided to jump into the business world and start Lulu’s.
Talk to us about your product curation. How do you decide which brands to offer?
My daughter and business partner, Caitlin Marsh, and I are constantly attending markets and conducting extensive research to curate our offerings. We prioritize brands that you can’t find on Amazon (which is becoming more challenging every day!), focus on women-owned businesses, and prefer products made in the U.S. or Europe. Every product we carry is something we would love to have in our own homes and are proud to sell.
What is your favorite or “must-have” LAFCO product and why?
We absolutely adore LAFCO’s signature one-wick candles. We carry about 25-30 different scents, and our customers always rave about our selection. The colorful packaging creates an attractive display while filling our store with wonderful fragrances.
Do you have a store pet or furry friend? What’s his or her name?
Yes! We have a store buddy named Gumball, who keeps us and our customers company throughout the day.
What advice or ideas would you like to share with other independent businesses?
You need to have thick skin and an endless supply of resilience to succeed in this industry. Over nearly two decades in business, we’ve weathered many challenges—wars, a recession, political unrest, and even a pandemic. What’s kept us going is our loyal customer base, many of whom have become lifelong friends. Adapting to changing circumstances and riding the waves of uncertainty have been key to our survival.
